Why does a French Caribbean island have an Anglican church overlooking the water?
The answer traces back to Swedish rule from 1784 to 1878. As the Anglican community grew on the island, plans for a dedicated church followed, and in 1855 the stone building you see today was completed and consecrated.
Built primarily from local stone, with limestone imported from France and dark volcanic rock from nearby St. Eustatius, the church was designed to endure. Nearly two centuries later, it continues to serve the local community and visitors.
Today, the church remains active and is lovingly looked after by longtime locals, including Marjorie and her family.

For generations of island families, including the Lacours, it has been a place to gather for life’s defining moments: weddings, baptisms, and final goodbyes.
It remains open to visitors and residents alike who wish to celebrate, reflect, or simply step inside.

Just outside, a peaceful garden honors Sibarth’s founder, Brook Lacour, recognizing her lasting dedication to both the church and the island.

Step inside, notice the light and breeze, and let the stillness settle.

Located in Gustavia and easily reached on foot, the church pairs naturally with a walk through the historic streets nearby. A simple stop that offers a meaningful connection to both the island and Sibarth’s heritage.
