Genesis: La Calèche

Our Life
11.01.2025

La Calèche opened in Gustavia in the early-1970s, founded by Brook and Roger Lacour at a time when Saint Barth was still largely undiscovered.

The shop sold beachwear, small essentials, and objects visitors would tuck into their luggage as reminders of the island. Even today, people stop us to share stories about it.

People arrived with questions. Where to stay. Who to call. Whether a property might be available to purchase. Brook and Roger answered each one, and behind the counter, something greater was taking shape.

Before long, visitors were doing more than browsing for swimsuits and sunscreen. They were arranging villa stays, planning day trips, finding trusted babysitters, and seeking local guidance.

As interest in the island grew, so did the need for support abroad, eventually leading them to create WIMCO, Sibarth’s American sister company in Newport, Rhode Island.

Over time, that experience grew into what would become Sibarth.

By the late 1980s, La Calèche had moved to what would be its final address, the space now home to the restaurant I’sola.

While the storefront is gone, its role in shaping Sibarth and St. Barth remains part of our foundation. Much has changed since those early days, but Brook and Roger’s instinct still guides us: pay attention, be helpful, and take care of the place you call home.
